Readers create a working application, developing examples that build from one chapter to the next. With each chapter readers are learning, practicing, and building on required skills necessary not only for wireless development, but also programming in general. By the end of the book, readers will have created a wireless database application that allows them to view, enter, and delete information.

The book provides a usable reference of summaries on all languages discussed within the book, as well as a comparison of the wireless devices, and different development tools on the market today.Wireless designers face the challenge of achieving their vision in the limited environment offered by devices like cell phones and PDAs. Recommended for all public libraries, Usability Handbook modifies advice found in web usability guides (see Computer Media, LJ 5/1/02) for the wireless environment, focusing on how wireless devices work and how best to design for them. Chapter summaries and discussion questions aid understanding; the CD-ROM includes WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) emulators and templates. Larger public libraries can consider the next two guides: for beginning wireless developers, WAP 2.0 discusses developing with WAP, then moves on to more advanced topics such as WMLScript, ASP, and connecting to databases. For more advanced developers, Wireless Java teaches wireless application development through step-by-step examples.

The pace of change within telecommunications, measured in terms of technology and the opening up of markets to competition, has continued steadily since the highly acclaimed first edition of the Telecommunications Engineer’s Reference Book was published. To keep up with all these changes this second edition has been extensively revised, and seven completely new chapters added.

The book maintains a balance between new developments and established technologies since telecommunications systems, once in the network, represent a substantial investment which tends to be mainted for a relatively long time. New operators have the advantage of being able to use the latest technologies when building their new networks.

The book is structured in five parts. Part 1 introduces mathematical techniques which are required for the analysis of telecommunications systems. Part 2 deals with the physical environment of telecommunications. Part 3 describes various components used within telecommunication systems, both wireline and wireless. Part 4 covers fundamental telecommunication topics. Part 5 describes telecommunication applications and represents the largest section of the book. The topics have been selected and grouped in order to cover all the major areas within telecommunications, spanning the field of transmission and switching, the transmission media being copper, fiber optic or wireless.

Obtain a more accurate analysis of radio propagation in cellular networks using the proven techniques described in this book. “Cell Planning for Wireless Communications” surveys the principle tools used in the planning of micro/pico cellular systems for personal communication networks. Engineers, researchers, consultants, and mobile communication graduate students learn how to use specific computer codes to perform a reliable analysis of the major aspects of micro/pico cellular design including propagation, fading estimation, mutual interference, cell geometry, teletraffic, and channel allocation.

The book shows you how to improve the design of microcellular network systems by combining propagation models with topographical/morphological databases and ray-tracing acceleration techniques. The authors explain Physical Optic (PO), Geometrical Optic (GO), and the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) for the analysis of propagation in complex urban or indoor scenarios. The book also survey select empirical propagation models.

With over 100 illustrations, 300 equations, computer models and applications to PCS planning, a tutorial presentation of the application of UTD to wireless problems, and new ray tracing algorithms, you get all the information you need to compute propagation in micro/pico cells in one reference. Furthermore, the approaches presented may also be applied to macrocellular systems.
